Our History

From the outset, Gunther's Building Center Ltd. was dedicated to the supply of specialized interior finishing materials for the residential construction industry.

Gunther Kockerbeck founded Gunther's Building Supplies Ltd. in 1954. In 1971, GBS became a holding company and Gunther's Building Center Ltd. was formed as the operating company, which is familiar to many Calgarians.

Gunther had the good sense to see that Calgary's homebuilders needed a one-stop shop for their interior finishing needs - doors, moldings, plywood, finish lumber and hardware. His insight and hard work in developing the finish package concept resulted in the rotary and ribbon mahogany packages and related hardware options being introduced into Calgary in the late 50's. Over the years, the interior finish packages offered by Gunther's have evolved and help set fashion trends in Calgary's housing market.

These finish packages included the mahogany, oak, pre-finished, paint grade, and molded skin lines marketed throughout the last 45+ years.

Gunther's sons joined him in the business as they grew and continue today together with the rest of the Gunther's team to carry on the tradition and commitment to providing value and quality in interior finish materials to the Calgary and regional markets.

In 2004 Gunther's celebrated it's 50th year operating in Calgary and vicinity. We look forward to serving our community well in the years to come.

The support of all our customers and friends is greatly appreciated and we invite you to our newly remodeled showroom to view (and order) our current product offerings.

Tribute to Our Founder

Gunther Kockerbeck was a pioneer in the residential housing industry in Calgary. Gunther moved to Calgary in 1951 with his wife, Anna and started working on his dream. He committed himself to providing Calgary's homebuilders with the latest in interior finishing products and made a unique contribution through the concept of 'the finish package' - a suite of fashion coordinated doors, trim, and hardware at various price points to satisfy Calgary's growing and diverse population.

Gunther's traditions of hard work, integrity, and customer satisfaction were ingrained on his family and staff over his entire lifetime. He cared about what he did and how his customers were treated. He respected truth and loyalty and was steadfast in his word. We continue to pursue these values and thank him for his example.
